Listening about people’s stories and caring about their needs is the first and most important step of addressing such needs. According to Silvia, often the primary necessity of those who are suffering is to receive attention and love. For children, this is essential for their survival. The relationship between the supporting family and the local children becomes central and is a testament of the friendship built across the borders.
For Effatà, relationships are important, once you are part of one of these projects you can receive regular updates from Silvia who shares photos and updated information on the activities’ progress.
Projects you can support
Sponsor a child education: you can choose to support a boy or girl in primary education. Going to school is essential for children in Uganda. It is key for receiving a basic education, building their future and providing protection from violence and abuse, especially for girls. It also enables children to eat one warm meal per day. With a 180 Euro donation, you can provide one year of education for one child. Schools start in January in Uganda and therefore donations should be made by mid December. Effatta’ staff periodically visits all the schools and children enrolled through this project. As a sponsor you will regularly receive a photo of the child together with the report cards and updates on his/her education progress.
Professional course: vocational courses (e.g. hairdresser, carpentry) allows youth to learn a profession, obtain an employment, start a business and become self-reliant. This is especially the case for young women who once independent can move out of situations of abuse and violence. The contribution for the professional course is 200 Euros.
Children’s home: in 2021, Effatta’ purchased a piece of land where the organization started building a children’s home to foster and protect children including disabled children whose parents can not care for them. The house lays on a large plot of land which is already being used for farming activities that will provide for the residents. The objective is for the home to become self-sustained over time. Follow the work of the children’s home. The construction of the building is finished, however it requires running water, electricity and furniture. Any donation is welcome to support this important project.
Purchase of a wheelchair: many children are born with physical disabilities due to parent’s health issues, including malaria and unhealthy habits during pregnancy. With a donation of 150- 200 Euros, you can help us purchase a wheelchair which makes disabled children more indepedent and able to access a better future.
Renting land for a year: land to cultivate means fresh fruit and vegetables and the possibility of selling what is not consumed gaining a small income. To support the purchase of land to rent for one year, the contribution needed is 50 euros.
Construction of a brick house: having a secure accommodation that offers protection, especially for the many mothers abandoned by their husbands, means living in peace and safety, without being in fear of eviction and having to move to unsuitable shelters. The contribution to build a brick house is 1000 euros.
Food for malnourished children: a hunger survival kit for a malnourished child can save his/her life, guaranteeing normal physical and mental development. The contribution for this kit is 50 euros per month.
Purchase of grazing animals: grazing animals like cow, pig, hen and goat are essential to produce milk, meat and eggs in order to increase the nutritional intake of a family and offer livelihood opportunities. The contribution varies according to the type of animal: 15 euros for an hen, 30 euros for a pig, 50 euros for a goat and around 600 euro for a cow.
